The Girl Who Fell From the Sky

In that universe, a young girl, who had plagued the grandmothers with questions seeking knowledge from birth, asked, “What is under the Sacred Tree of Life?”

Knowing the girl’s drive for answers, the grandmothers replied, “If you want to know what is under the Tree of Life, go and find out for yourself.”

The girl went to the Tree of Life and began digging. She dug, and dug, under the Tree of Life, until there was a massive opening onto black space. Suddenly, she and the Tree of Life began falling through the black space together. They fell for an unknown time until, off in the distance, the girl saw a small blue ball that, as it got closer, she could see was covered in ocean water.

The girl knew she would not survive if she continued to fall. So as she passed through the blackness, she cried out to all the winged things for help.

The winged things heard the voice and sensed the good intentions of the girl, so they called out to each other. Using their wings, they created a bridge to gently allow the girl to fall onto the back of one, then another and another. The winged things then called out to the sea creatures, and the great turtles rose to the ocean's surface in response.

The great turtles gathered on the surface, took the girl that fell from the sky onto their backs and, in agreement, took turns carrying her.

The girl lived on sea turtles' backs until the day came when all the creatures realized the girl was with child. The animals knew the girl was not one of them and knew she could not give life to a child on the back of a turtle.

The great turtles called out to the otters, the seals, and all of the creatures of the great water. They all answered. Many species of animals began bringing soil from around and between the roots of the Tree of Life. So many that the number is unknown. They began carrying it up to the light from the ocean floor, mounding it to make a home for the girl who fell from the sky and her child. Some say it was the otters, some the whales, and some the dolphins, but all are right. As they worked, the sea creatures called to all known animals for help. It is believed it was the beavers who used their tails to pack the ocean’s earth flat.

Once the job was completed, the great turtles asked for volunteers to live with the girl and her child on the lands and great seas and oceans.
